What is it about Bad Elster?

The installation is an investigation into the presentation and re-presentation of memory and history. Through found material such as photograph and archive material I show how the private and public, the factual and the fictional, imaginary are inseparably intertwined.

Only by recognizing the complexity of our collective past we realize the ability to restruct memory. Here I demonstrate how given historical facts can be turned upside-down through the differingnarrations of history. In my exploration of the relationship between art, history and memory, the work inhabites a contemporary actuality.

The project is accompanied by a series of collages: the first explores the conceptual framework, the process and; the second, functions as the source, inspiration, reference for the entire project, consisting of philosophical articles; and the third, discuses "collective memory" through four studies.

Keepsakes – objects of memory in everyday life: their semiotic narratives in the scope of site tourism and event culture.

The first keepsakes and souvenirs of historical events were/ is being produced and kept by survivors who had to live on with their memory of the past/ present.

This project focuses on a series of mass produced souvenir objects, which are often sold at historical sites. These objects are a typical representation of a traditional souvenir keeping behavior which has a commonplace in public memory often connected to events seen as so-called breakdown of civilization.

This work initially takes the form of an explorative reserch and is then followed by an analysis from a cultural semiotic perspective. Eventually, I am seeking for analogies by comparing the structures of collective memory collecting, which clearly represent a “negative memory” with those of historical sites, which mediate an interpretation of positive historical events.

I am undertaking research that is challenging my perception of every day life, but is also commenting on the cultural life in norway and its regions. Taking the intimacy of the portrait and magnifying it to a monumental scale, bears witness to the passing of time. Imprinted within the thousands of blades of growing grass, the face became a living landscape. The image emerged as the blades of grass matured into a vibrant state and then slowly faded as the grass died over the course of the exhibition.

Sometimes it feels like our minds are an physical extension of a old fashion archive, in the back files get forgotten and lost in the archiving process while others are kept in front for frequent use.

Today’s challenge is to store information, and locate the gaps within. Every time I start a new project I find it helpful to set a milestone in form of challenges, on what I can have done. Not as much what I can do, but how I have do it.

This makes the challenge an opportunity to learn something new, aswell as exercising my mind.So instead of asking what can be done, I ask how can it be done...

Another day, another milestone is passed by. Today I have handed in my written thesis for my Master of Fine Arts, Public Art And New Artistic Strategies. 2 years of research, investigation and experimentation into theory=practice in public space.

It has been some ride I have to say, so must lost and found. So much learned and gained. Built and rebuilt. I could go on forever, even though it might be to early to reflect at this stage, I can say that it have been worth it. What the future holds is yet to be seen, but it is definitely only a beginning.

From now on the blog will continue but with a different purpose. To continue my research into memory but outside the setting of graduate studies . It is time to turn knowledge into practice, of every day life.

Trace on my Mind…

There are many ways to trace, in current history we have even people with the occupation to trace. In the arts the idea of trace is often more related to ways of expressing yourself, with a narrative in mind referring to the past. At times the audience becomes put in a situation were they are the once tracing a work. With that in mind I checked my computers definitions of //trace// and it says the following;

I guess that trough my process I have followed all these steps without being aware of it.
Today I am searching for ways of erasing. In this situation I have gathered a bucket of water and a sponge to clean my windows. In that process you go trough a reverse of trace. But even when you are done you can still detect traces of my movements.
Is it impossible to undo a trace, without leaving a new one?

On a rainy Monday I meet with Narelle Jubelin in Weimar, Germany and went for a walk.

Later that evening she held a talk as a part of the Monday night lecture series in the ACC gallery.

Ungrammatical Landscape, a recent installation in Granada of petit-points and murals by Madrid-based Australian artist Narelle Jubelin, turns the genre of landscape against itself to plot geographies of displacement. Jubelin's multi-layered narrative that calls forth memory and contingency is woven through four floors of the Centro de Arte José Guerrero, which honors the Granadinan artist José Guerrero (1914-1991) who became a second generation Abstract Expressionist and mural painter in New York during the 1950s. In a remarkable homage to this native exile, and with the assistance of two local artists, Paloma Gámez Lara and Domingo Zorrilla Lumbreras, Jubelin records the spatial memory of his exhibited works in some 90 rectangular monochrome murals, each painted to scale with non-expressive brushstrokes and then inscribed with a title, date and dimensions.

What does it take to remember?
Why is it important to remember?
And whom are we remembering?

I guess being in time or on time can be measured in different ways. How do we interpret the current trends in souvenirs in our neighbour countries? Does our ways of commemorating become a matter of taste? When does our past become present and our memory a distant flashback placed in history’s scale of who was good or bad. And then what? Where are we as individuals when more pressing concern arises; who are we when our collective memory becomes clouded, twisted and absurd. What happens to us? Can we really see clearly the road we are heading down? Who are making the maps we are following...And who are the planners for what lies ahead...

The Norwegian artist Lene Berg choose to use the word "rullegardin" or "window blind" a way of describing how a place deals with its past and its inhabitants. The word is used to describe the way Weimar architecture is simulating a time and a place long gone or in Lene's words may never have existed in her new video work " The Weimar Conspiracy" 2007.

For me this is such a powerful description. To fully understand were I am coming from in this matter I have to explain that I grow up in a part of Norway were you have to use a window blind 6 months a year to keep the sunlight outside your bedroom during the summer months, and live with total darkness the other 6 months.

So for me the word "window blind" is saying so much more then describing a way of keeping light out, but also a way of preserving an idea of what is outside.
Explaining how to understand what is outside aswell as inside. The "window blind" can therefore be used as a metaphor, describing the space between private and public.

KNIT IT World Wide Exhibition - (Weimar).

– An art piece about Caring and Compassion

The date is to be set in may 2007 and will be carried out in front of a chosen monument in Weimar. For me it would be interesting to set in front of the Bauhaus University as a contested site in present aswell as in the past.

KNIT IT is based on interactive participation of men and women of all ages knitting on white knitwear. Stand by important sites, sanctuaries and other places where people gather. Stand on line. Have a back-up plan in case of rain.

At this moment in time there is about 5 thousand females with my surname as first or second name. It is a name with Greek heritage and has the meaning "Pearle".

Why is this important, well I will come back to that later but I can reveal one perspective in the case? It is certainly connected to the sentiment of being. When you realise that 5000 is all there is it does become interesting.

Today I have taken the time to read a very interesting book that Mary Jane Jacob recommended. It just arrived in my mailbox so I decided to take the day to read up...and it was indeed worth the wait.

Chances and Challenges for Contemporary Art"

It certainly has a good look at its enemies and a good go at them, but at the same time it tries to make a very precise point of also being for something else. In one simple sense, the whole book is about what that ‘something else’ can be. A ‘something else’ that comes in the guises and acts of small political gestures. A ‘something else’ that allows us to find and generate tools and the courage to find alternatives beside and beyond the instrumentalization of our life worlds, the society of the spectacle, the full blown commodification and mystification of artistic practice.

A few days in the country have really done me good. Now back in Weimar I guess it is time to gather my first draft, write a few letters and get back to work. Even though the pollen makes my eyes runover I do feel a strong "lust for life"( in the words of Iggy Pop). Yesterday I spent the day in Bremen also visiting The Paula Moderson Becker Museum and had a very interesting meeting with the director Dr.Rainer Stamm that also have just published a new book on Paula Moderson Becker. It was a very inspiring dialog and I also got the opportunity to talk to him about the Leben! project in Worpswede. Otherwise being in the north of Germany made me aware of the use of the term culture and how it has become cliche in more ways then one. The reason why I say this is how I see it used and connected to media and press. No limits there at all. TBK

In 2006, Danish artist Marianne Joergensen stitched a pink blanket over a combat tank to protest Denmark's involvement in the Iraq war. With volunteers contributing nearly 4000 knitted squares, the power of the piece is in people coming together to send a common message, Joergensen explains.

As a little girl I was captivated with these paintings by Harald Oskar Sohlberg. Since the first time I saw them in the national gallery, the light and the landscape haunted me representing the very idea of heimat. This is one of my first recalls of having an art exsperience. for a few minutes it was just me and the painting in the museum.

For years I used to carry a postcard in my bag, in many ways the image is just as importent for me today , illustrating the idea of nature rather then the real. but also an illustration of a meeting with art within the white cube. the possibility to transport yourself out of the four walls and out into the imaginary of your mind. I guess it makes me aware of how important this experience was and who it wit a sting of others have broght me were I am today.TBK

Harald Oskar Sohlberg (29 September 1869–19 June 1935) was a Norwegian Neo-romantic painter, particularly known for his depictions of the mountains of Rondane and the town of Røros, Norway.

Yesterday was a day of new descoveries. I had am meeting with Dr. phil. habil. Wolfgang Fritz Bock and he gave me new perspective to my master thesis topic.
